Empirical Remote Sensing Algorithms to Retrieve SPM and CDOM in Québec Coastal Waters

چکیده

In most coastal waters, riverine inputs of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and colored dissolved organic (CDOM) are the primary optically active constituents. Moderate- high-resolution satellite optical sensors, such as Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat-8 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) Sentinel-2, offer a synoptic view at high spatial resolution (10–30 m) with weekly revisits allowing study dynamics (e.g., river plumes sediment re-suspension events). Accurate estimations CDOM SPM from space require regionally tuned bio-optical algorithms. Using an in situ dataset CDOM, SPM, properties (both apparent inherent) various field campaigns carried out waters estuary Gulf St. Lawrence (EGSL) eastern James Bay (JB) ( N = 347), we developed regional algorithms for OLI MSI sensors. We found that absorption 440 nm [ g (440)] can be retrieved using red-to-green band ratio both EGSL JB. contrast, algorithm required adjustments due to significant differences mass-specific inherent properties. Finally, application images indicated atmospheric correction (AC) C2RCC gives accurate remote-sensing reflectance R rs ) absolute values. However, ACOLITE best results estimation (almost null bias; median symmetric accuracy 45% 2 0.78) it preserved spectral shape, while tending yield positively bias (88%). conclude choice depends parameter interest.

OPTICAL REMOTE SENSING TECHNIQUES TO ESTIMATE PHYTOPLANKTON CHLOROPHYLL a CONCENTRATIONS IN COASTAL WATERS WITH VARYING SUSPENDED MATTER AND CDOM CONCENTRATIONS

"Roughly 98% of the world’s oceans and coastal waters fall into the Case 1 category, and almost all bio-optical research has been directed toward these phytoplanktondominated waters. However, near-shore and estuarine Case 2 waters are disproportionately important to human interests such as recreation, fisheries, and military operations. It is therefore likely that Case 2 waters will receive inc...

Remote sensing of suspended sediments and shallow coastal waters

Ocean color sensors were designed mainly for remote sensing of chlorophyll concentrations over the clear open oceanic areas (Case 1 water) using channels between 0.4–0.86 m. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) launched on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Terra and Aqua spacecrafts is equipped with narrow channels located within a wider wavelength range bet...

Inverse Problems in Optical Remote Sensing of Coastal Waters

The project objectives are: 1) to develop new models of water, bottom, and surface returned LIDAR signals and to develop new mathematical inverse techniques to extract from actual or simulated LIDAR returns the inherent optical properties of water (IOP) and to estimate parameters of internal waves (IW) from IW-induced disturbances of IOP stratification; 2) to develop theoretical mathematical te...

Hyperspectral Airborne Remote Sensing of the Belgian Coastal Waters

On the 16th of June 2003 a CASI (Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager) hyperspectral airborne remote sensing campaign took place above the Southern North Sea, just offshore of Oostende. In coincidence with the airborne overpasses seaborne measurements of water leaving reflectance and water quality parameters were performed. In addition near-simultaneous satellite imagery are available. This p...
